🌿 A remarkable example of late 19th- and early 20th-century architecture.
The building was constructed in 1881 by Giorgi Kartvelishvili, a philanthropist, public figure, and First Guild merchant who was well known for supporting Georgian culture, literature, and music.
In the early 20th century, his son, Nikoloz Kartvelishvili, invited architect Simon Kldiashvili to renovate the house. As a result, the façade acquired elements of European Art Nouveau, making it one of the earliest examples of this architectural style in Tbilisi.
🌿 Architecture and distinctive features
The façade is adorned with unique decorative details, including metal balconies and artistic elements characteristic of the Art Nouveau style.
At the entrance, an unusual Georgian inscription reads “სალამი” (“Hello”), making the building particularly distinctive in Tbilisi’s historic center.
The interiors were decorated with painted walls featuring motifs from Northern European mythology and romantic scenes, creating the atmosphere of a refined cultural salon.
🌿 Cultural life and elegant gatherings
The Kartvelishvili House was more than just a residence — it was an important cultural gathering place in Tbilisi.
Its rooms hosted social evenings, musical and literary salons attended by intellectuals, artists, writers, and musicians. The house also welcomed theatrical performances and musical concerts featuring well-known performers of the time.
Nikoloz Kartvelishvili himself received his musical education in Paris.
🌿 Today, the house remains an important architectural and cultural landmark of Tbilisi.
🍃 A unique piece of 19th-century heritage.
